Answer #1:

old people are a bit cranky sumtimes and they demand more attention....mayb she wanted to startd a talk but the sarcsm ticked her off............but i like ur answr

Answer #2:

I think the way you respond to a dumb question is the difference between it being a smart ass response and a funny response. If you answer the question with a grin on your face, you're clearly intending to be funny. If you snap it out with a look of annoyance on your face, then it's likely to be regarded as a smart ass answer.

Answer #3:

I think sarcasm tends to inflame emotions. Stupid leaves you blank feeling.

I would answer this same way myself LOL
But I think her mother was probably just using a common greeting type phrase. Kinda of like " You busy ?" and you can see they are but its just a lead in to a conversation .
On the other hand , my mom wouldve laughed and said something like .. you didnt remember to wear your fins again. We have a sarcastic understanding.

Answer #4:

Well, that's not being sarcastic so much as being disrespectful. That is her mother, after all. Sarcasm is funny when used appropriately, but not when it is used in a disrespectful manner. I also kind of get the feeling that you aren't really posting this as a question, because it seems pretty sarcastic to me.

Answer #5:

Because the mother meant it try to start a conversation. You're ex by being sarcastic tried to stop one.

So the mother's not creative enough to come up with a good line? Why would you want to purposely draw attention to that fact, to humiliate her and make her feel stupid? Reminding her she's not clever? It was mean spirited on you ex's part, and for no reason.

She should feel ashamed for going out of her way to try to hurt her mom's feelings like that.
